Assisting In Assisted Living Decisions

How Skilled Nursing Benefits Your Loved One In A Nursing Home Or Assisted Living

When you have a loved one that is no longer safe living at home alone, you have some choices. While you can hire skilled nursing and assistants to come into the home and provide care, chances are high that your budget won't allow that. A skilled nursing facility gives your family member the care they need in an environment that is safe and nurturing. Whether you choose an assisted living facility because the needs are not excessive, or a nursing home is required to keep your loved one safe, it's important to understand why skilled nursing is so important to those who no longer have the ability to take care of their own needs.

Skilled Nursing Monitors Overall Health

While your loved one may receive personal care from nursing assistants, skilled nurses are there to address any concerns that come up. If there is a wound developing from mattress pressure, or when medications need to be given, a skilled nurse is there to provide the care. If the issue requires a physician, the nurse will report their concerns to the attending physician so that your loved one's medical needs are met.

All Care Is Documented

If you have any concerns about the care your loved one is receiving, you can access care notes with the permission of your loved one. The permission is generally granted at the time of admission, or when you are designated as the health care proxy of the individual in question. You can review care notes and ask the nurse questions if you have any. Skilled nursing provides the care your loved one needs that they are not able to get with ease at home.

Nurses Know How to Help

Nurses who have worked in a facility for some time are there to work as an advocate for the patients they care for. They understand the complexities of the healthcare system and will work hard to make sure your family member is comfortable. Care plans are written by nurses, and they will assess the needs of your family member on a regular basis.  They are the individuals taking care of your family member day-to-day and will notice changes in behavior or mood.

Skilled nursing can help your loved one live a better quality of life if you're not able to take care of them. Medications are received on time, wounds are dressed carefully, and any medical needs are relayed to the doctor right away. Call your local nursing home for more information.

About Me

Assisting In Assisted Living Determination

I never thought I would be putting a parent into assisted living. I always imagined that, when they couldn't live alone, my parents would live with me and I would care for them. What I didn't bargain for was my dad passing away when I was a young adult, and my mother developing dementia later on. I wasn't equipped to give my mom the care that she needed, and coming to that realization was hard. I know I can't be the only one who has struggled with the decision, so I created this site to share my thoughts and experiences with assisted living selection and management. I hope the information here can help you if you are facing such a choice.
