Assisting In Assisted Living Decisions

Helping A Loved One Adjust To Nursing Home Care

The transition from home to permanent residency in a nursing home can be a difficult transition for some people. If the condition requiring 24-hour care is sudden, the adjustment can be even more difficult. If you have a loved one who is nervous about going to a nursing home but requires the care being offered, there are a number of ways you can provide support. From being there for their first day to learning the names of care providers and residents, your presence at the nursing home can be very comforting to your loved one. When you have the time and desire, you can help your loved one adjust to their new surroundings so that they get the care they deserve.

Bring In Familiar Items

Their new living space will be a clean slate. When you bring in familiar items, such as family photos or a favorite blanket, this will help make the transition easier. If the move is permanent, you can bring in a chair they love, a television, and other comfort items. You can set up their new space in a way that is much like the space they had at home to watch television. Look for ways to make their room comfortable and inviting.

Get to Know the Social Worker

The nursing home will have a social worker who will get to know your loved one and their needs. If you have concerns about your loved one adjusting to the nursing home, you can talk to the social worker about it. You may feel more at ease yourself as you get to know the people who are going to be taking care of your loved one.

Share Meals With Your Family Member

If you have the time, spend some of your time having a meal with your loved one. If they are shy, it can be very hard to engage in conversation with other residents. Meal times are a great opportunity to get to know others who live in the nursing home. You may be the bridge to communication to help your loved one feel more comfortable during meal times. You will also get the opportunity to see how meals are run, and what kind of food your loved one receives.

You can support a loved one as they adjust to living in a nursing home. Familiar items will help, and your presence can make a big difference. Engage with care providers and look for ways to provide a comfortable living space for your loved one. For more information, check out websites like http://www.vvrconline.org.

About Me

Assisting In Assisted Living Determination

I never thought I would be putting a parent into assisted living. I always imagined that, when they couldn't live alone, my parents would live with me and I would care for them. What I didn't bargain for was my dad passing away when I was a young adult, and my mother developing dementia later on. I wasn't equipped to give my mom the care that she needed, and coming to that realization was hard. I know I can't be the only one who has struggled with the decision, so I created this site to share my thoughts and experiences with assisted living selection and management. I hope the information here can help you if you are facing such a choice.
